What You’re Doing Wrong On Twitter

Twitter is possibly one of the easiest social media sites to use and it can be used for so many different purposes. You can use Twitter to gain a large following, to start conversations or to grow your blog traffic.

No matter what you are using Twitter for, there are some mistakes that you could be making which is making people run away from that follow button.

Mistakes You’re Making On Twitter

Automatic DMs

Ugh, how many of these do I have to receive a day?! There’s a very good chance that I will unfollow you if you send automatic DMs.

Only self promoting

I love it when people promote there blog on their twitter. I will most probably click the link and have a little stalk of your blog. However, if you ONLY talk about your blog posts, I will unfollow you. I want to get to know the person behind the blog too. If I only wanted to see links to your blog then I would just bookmark your blog and check up on it when I fancied a read.

Too many retweets

The fact that you can retweet is great! I love seeing funny posts that people want to share. What I do love is seeing people who don’t have anything to say themselves. I want to hear your own voice instead of just retweets.

Not using hashtags

It is said that if you use hashtags in your tweets then you are likely to reach almost double the audience. And I mean, that’s the point, right?! You want lots of people to see your tweets so use those hashtags!

Have you made any of these Twitter mistakes? What else do you think is a huge no-no on Twitter?

Thank you for sharing this ☺️ I started out using Twitter just to promote my blog posts but then I read a few bloggers’ advice against this and totally realised how robot-like it seems! I’m starting to get the hang of Twitter now and chatting with other bloggers more, which is way more fun 🙂 Twitter chats are going to be my next step! Can I ask if automatic DMs are the default setting? I really, really hope no one has received them from me… totally agree with you about them xx

As far as I know, automatic DMs are something that people have to set up themselves

Completely agree with all of these! I absolutely HATE automated DMs, they’re so off-putting! The whole point of social media is to be social and I think some people forget this 🙂

Great post Eleanor! I cannot agree enough with your points. Especially automatic DMs, they drive me insane to a point where most of the time, I unfollow. Self promotion too – sometimes it’s just too much! Though I guess sometimes I put out promotional tweets but forget to Tweet inbetween #guilty. I’d say my biggest mistake is not using hashtags purely because I forget and also on the forgetful note, I’m so bad at joining Twitter chats. By the time I remember, they’re half way through! X

Absolutely hate automatic DMs. Although I am probably guilty of self-promoting a bit too much which I should change!
