Fat is not an insult. However, if you use the word fat as an insult then it is highly offensive. It’s not what you say it is how you say it.
As a plus size women, I have heard my fair share of fat comments. Whether it’s a full on “fat cow” comment or just a small “if you lost some weight..” comment, they still manage to hit home. Yelling “you’re fat” at someone is almost definitely going to hurt them somehow. Whether you’re a size 8 or 20, you would probably take offense.
This is because from a very young age, women are taught that being fat is bad. The word fat is associated with unhealthy and therefore, fat is not only insulting you but your whole lifestyle. I feel like as women, we should be raising each other up, not trying to knock each other down with rubbish insults. What happened to girl power? The fat that the majority of the time it is women calling other women fat is disgusting.
From a very young age, I have had body confidence issues. When I look back now at times when I called myself fat, I realise that I was completely perfect. There was nothing wrong with how I looked at all. I’ve lived all my life (that I can remember) thinking that I was fat and I’m slowly coming to realise that it really isn’t okay to think that. It has taken a long time for me to start feeling this way but I am slowly starting to accept that even though I am fat, I am beautiful.
There are so much worse things to be called than ‘fat’. Personally, I would prefer to be called fat than selfish, ignorant or stupid.
Fat isn’t an insult. Using it offensively is.
