How to Overcome Writer’s Block

Writer’s block can be annoying. You’re half way through writing a long novel or even a blog post and suddenly you hit a big, brick wall of nothing. You can’t think of anything to write and your brain’s going crazy.

So here’s my tips for overcoming writers block…


First of all, you should accept that you have writer’s block. It happens to all the best writers.  Don’t get discouraged and give up all together.

Try Free Writing

When writer’s block strikes, try doing some free writing. You could write about anything you wish. It could be a rant, a short story or even a poem. You could try doing free writing for 15-20 minutes a day. This will help your brain get the words from your head and onto paper.

Eliminate Distractions

Another way to overcome writer’s block is to eliminate distractions. Turn off your phone and get off your laptop.  Try clearing your desk. A cluttered desk puts the mind in a state of confusion. Ask all your friends and family to give you space for an hour or so. Give yourself time and space to just write.

Write without fear

Writing something that you know other people will read can be daunting. Try to forget about your readers for a bit. Make an imaginary friend. Imagine that they are your biggest fan. Write with no fear,  knowing that your biggest fan will love it.

Get Moving

Getting your body moving can be a great way to get over writer’s block. Try looking back over all your old work. Although this could be very embarrassing, you might find inspiration or even a line that you could work into your new piece.

Although writer’s block can be disheartening, you don’t need to give up.
