Something that I don’t mention often is how my boyfriend and I met.
Fun fact: We met on Tinder.
A lot of people think that Tinder is a place to find hookups but for me, Tinder helped me meet the person who I love.
As you can probably guess, I spoke to quite a few more people before finding my now boyfriend, Simon. Because of this, I learnt quite a few little tips about how to avoid to weird people and catfishes.
You need to know what you want
The world of online dating is scary! There’s people looking for hookups, people looking for friends, people looking for partners and people who are just there for fun. If you are just there for a hookup then let people know. If you head into there world of online dating by knowing what you want, then there’s a much less chance of you getting hurt.
People will lie about themselves
I realise that I’m starting this off a little cynical but I just really wanted to make this point. I once spoke to a guy on Tinder who told me that he has his own house, 4 cars, all the newest technology and holiday homes all over the world. It sounds pretty good, right? Apart from the fact that it probably wasn’t true. When speaking to this guy, I started noticing more of his little lies and it really made me think. He was so eager to impress people that he made up a completely new life. Turns out that the real him (who lived with his parents and went to uni) was actually really nice and we spoke for a long time.
People might judge you on your appearance
I never realised how much people judge people looks until there was an app made to help you date someone based from a photo of themselves. Enough said!
Starting a conversation is hard… for everyone!
So you get the match, you see that little notification that suggests you say hi… but you can’t just say hi. Saying hi is not the correct way to start a conversation. Or is it?! No one knows how to start a conversation. You don’t want to come on too strong but you also don’t want to seem uninterested. Simply saying “hi, how are you?” is definitely a safe option but it’s also boring. Saying “you look hot in your pic” might be straightforward but it could also come across too strong. So what should you say? The answer, is whatever the heck you want to! This goes for real life too. No one knows how to approach a stranger and start a conversation but you might as well give it a go.
Not everyone will have the same interests as you
Pretty much every Tinder conversation will consist of people trying to find out what interests you have. They will ask about films, book, TV shows and any other entertainment type of thing. This can be great until you realise that you have absolutely nothing in common. But fear not. Not all is lost. Just because you don’t like the same films doesn’t mean that you will have nothing to talk about. It will actually mean that you will have a whole new list of films and music to try out.
