I’m sure by now you’ve heard and read all the stories about yoga and its benefits. I had! Yet, I continued to ignore. I figured that because I was plus size, yoga just wasn’t for me. Unfortunately, this is because most of the yoga advertisement feature photos and videos of skinny girls.
What people need to know is that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your size or age is.
I made a little list of things that can help you with yoga as a plus sized person.
Plus Size Yoga Tips
1. Drink lots of water.
What a lot of people love about yoga is that it’s a form of exercise that you can do without raising your heart rate and you don’t sweat. However, I find that I do sweat… a lot! Because of the sweating, it is important to drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
2. Get yourself some good clothing.
As a woman with larger boobs, I know how difficult it can be to do any form of exercise unless you have a good sports bra. Get yourself a good bra, comfy shoes and clothes that you can easily move in. No one wants to be doing yoga in skinny jeans!
3. Get a yoga mat.
No matter what size you are, I recommend that you buy yourself a mat. However, as a plus size person, it’s a lot more important. Holding the poses can put pressure on your joints which the mat will help to soften. You can pick up yoga mats pretty cheap.
4. Make the poses suit you.
As a plus size person, certain poses can be more difficult to get into. To be completely honest, this is because we have a little extra jiggle that can get in the way. Don’t be afraid to change the pose a little bit so that you can make it work for you.
5. Don’t worry about missing a pose.
This is almost the same as point number 4. If a pose is too difficult and it’s not easily modified, then don’t beat yourself up if you decide to skip it out. Especially at the beginning of your yoga journey, you don’t want to push yourself too hard before you get to fully enjoy the yoga benefits.
6. Let yourself fall.
When doing yoga, you will wobble and fall down. At first, I was so embarrassed by falling and I thought that I was failing. I wasn’t! falling is all part of it. You fall, get back up and try again.
7. Practice everyday.
By doing a little bit of yoga everyday, you will become a yoga pro! Each time you do a pose, you strengthen your body making it easier to hold the pose in the future.
8. Find a yoga friend.
You will have more success if someone is there to encourage you and push you to keep going. Having someone there to support you can be the key to success.
9. Practise at home.
I never have and probably never will attend a yoga class. This is because I much prefer doing things at my own pace. If you do go to a class, it would be beneficial to you to continue your practise at home. If you struggle with one pose in particular then you can spend a little extra time at home practising.
10. Remember why you decided to start yoga.
There are many reasons to start doing yoga and everyone does it for different reasons. Maybe it’s for stretching, exercising, getting those endorphins going, relaxing the nervous system, breathing or finding peace.
Do you do yoga as a plus sized person? What are some of your tips?
P.S. I am not a trained physician or medical practitioner so I do recommend that you consult your doctor or GP before starting any exercise regime.
